Chapter Seventeen

Home Sweet Home

Davin

I rushed out of Ikelia’s home, feeling warmth in my cheeks. Every time Kalani was near, my heart played to its own rhythm, too fast for me to handle. I wanted it to stop, because it had just made me act like a fool. I certainly didn’t act that way when we first met or anytime later. Something had changed.

Either I liked or hated her. But I didn’t hate people, or anyone for that matter. Well, maybe demons and Lilith. Lilith, she was something else. A category on her own. A monster. The hell queen. All the bad, evil things. You name it. That was her.

I wanted to wrap little Ikelia in my arms and keep her safe, but all I could do was watch from the side when I went into her memories. Lilith had made her forget the place Harold had told her to meet. Why?

But why there and for what purpose? How could Harold have known the future? Could he even help Ikelia? My heart hurt again as I recalled what Ikelia had been through. As these thoughts dizzied my mind, I reached home and walked around to the back door.

Before I entered I text Ikelia.

Me: Don’t worry. Everything will work out.

Ikelia: Thank you.

Me: So, is Kalani there?

Ikelia: I’m not her secretary. Stop sexting. Call her.

Me: So she does have a sense of humor.

Ikelia: Bye.

I sent her a laughing emoji with tears and then texted Kalani.

Me: Want to go out to dinner with me tomorrow night?

Kalani: I would love to.

Me: Perfect. I’ll talk to you soon.

The sweet scent of edelweiss flowers greeted me from the burning candles I had set on a table near the door. Ever since we’d learned the scent repelled the demons, everyone who knew about them burned the same candles.

I frowned at Eli sitting shoulder to shoulder with my niece, watching TV. They were…what did humans say…boyfriend and girlfriend. A stupid name for it. Because they weren’t friends. They were more than that.

When I cleared my throat, Eli scooted over real fast. I hid my smile—I loved messing with him.

“Uncle Davin.” He rose and almost bumped into the side table.

He wore jeans, T-shirt, and a leather jacket. That boy was handsome, I had to admit. When I’d first met him, he gave off the “I’m a bad boy with a good heart” vibe, especially since he rode a motorcycle.

I had been meaning to get a leather jacket like his. I’d already purchased a motorcycle. His appearance seemed to attract the gals. Not that I wanted the same, but I wanted to look cool.

I had a reputation to uphold. After all, the students called me Mr. President and I was voted the most popular teacher.

“Eli.” I gave him a curt nod and the sound of oil sizzling filled my ears, along with the smell of meat. My nephew must be cooking again.

“Uncle Davin, where have you been?” Lucia sounded more like a mother than a niece.

I narrowed my eyes at her. She wore jeans, and a form fitting sweater I didn’t approve of.
